A Guide to Permanent Makeup Healing

Permanent makeup takes time to heal. You want your clients to have the best results, which happens by letting the skin heal properly. Here are some tips for caring for PMU, whether it’s brows, liner or lips!

Brows

Definitely keep hair away from the face and keep bangs away from brows. There might be redness, swelling and skin sensitivity right after the procedure.

Let scabbing fall off on its own. Expect little black flakes to fall off. To prevent dryness, clean and moisturize eyebrows with aftercare products.

On day 5, the top layer of the skin will start to peel off. Eyebrows may be itchy around this time, so moisturize to soothe the itchiness.

Around 3 to 6 weeks after the procedure, the color will finally settle and the hair strokes look crisper.

Liner

Avoid eyeliner and mascara after the procedure.  To keep germs and bacteria from spreading around the area, avoid touching or rubbing your eyes.

Little black flakes may fall out of lashes over the next few days, but do not pick it off.

A tight liner application should heal within 3 to 7 days, and a thicker liner could take 7 to 10 days.

Lips

Apply healing balm over the area and avoid wearing lipstick. There will be scabbing and it’s tempting to pick it, but let it fall off by itself.

The swelling and dryness immediately after the procedure will pass after about 3 days. Lips will look dry and chapped as they heal, and initially the color gets lighter before it comes back. The real color comes through after about two weeks.

Healing timeline

The biggest thing to keep in mind is that the pigment fades. The color will look much lighter upon healing. Remember to avoid direct contact with water immediately after the procedure  (saunas, hot tubs, and swimming pools.) If there is any wetness or oozing plasma, pat it dry using lint-free tissue.

Everyone’s skin heals differently, and letting it fully heal and repair is the key to good results!
